Dunglass Estate Wedding Inspiration at Thrive with Brooke Johnson

A Dunglass Estate wedding hits differently.

Set in East Lothian, with its dramatic coastline and open skies, Dunglass Estate feels both vast and intimate at the same time. When I travelled up to Scotland for Thrive, a two-day wedding photography conference by Photography Farm, I knew the venue would be special.

Thrive brought together photographers from all over the world for two days of learning and shoot sessions with industry mentors, including Brooke Johnson. And spending that time at Dunglass Estate, particularly inside the gothic Dunglass Collegiate Church, was something else entirely.

Dunglass Estate Wedding Venue in East Lothian

If you’re searching for wedding venues in East Lothian, Dunglass Estate deserves your attention.

It’s not just another country house. It’s layered. Moody. Textured. There’s history in the walls and space to breathe in the grounds. It doesn’t feel staged. It feels real.

The Gothic Setting of Dunglass Collegiate Church

The Dunglass Collegiate Church is the heart of it.

A distinctive 15th-century gothic church with stone arches, dramatic windows and light that shifts by the minute. It isn’t soft and pastel. It’s shadow and depth. For a Dunglass Estate wedding, that ceremony space changes everything. The architecture does half the storytelling for you. The light cuts in strong lines. The shadows create shape and tension. It’s the kind of place where you can go minimal if you want to.

Why Dunglass Estate Stands Out Among Wedding Venues in East Lothian

East Lothian isn’t short on beautiful venues. But Dunglass Estate feels a bit different.
There’s a calmness to the setting, even with its scale. The grounds are expansive, but the church is very intimate. You get the scale and the atmosphere, if you want a space with character and presence, but without anything feeling overdone or overly polished, Dunglass really delivers. It gives you drama without effort. And for documentary-style photography, that’s gold.

Thrive at Dunglass Estate

Thrive, run by Lisa Devlin of Photography Farm, is designed to push you. Two full days. Learning from some of the industry’s leaders. Real conversations. No gatekeeping.

Day one was talks and education. Day two was shoot sessions with the mentors. And watching Brooke Johnson work and talk through her process was one of the most profound experiences of the whole conference.

Learning from Brooke Johnson

Brooke’s philosophy is simple and unapologetic.
“My key thing for a wedding day, I will not orchestrate I will only highlight, if it’s chaotic I’ll play into the chaos.”
And she meant it.

“That means I show the good the bad and the ugly, I show the f*ck ups, I show the tears, I show the split milk, the bloody heels, broken nails. I am allergic to perfection.”

Spending time watching her shoot, interacting with Mackenzie and Chris, hearing her break down her decisions and talk through light in real time, was nothing short of inspiring. She doesn’t control a space like Dunglass Collegiate Church. She reads it. She responds to it. The gothic architecture. The heavy shadows. The shifting light. You can’t overpower it. You work with it.

What I Took Away From It

Confidence in chaos.

That’s the biggest takeaway.
Not smoothing everything over. Not chasing perfection. Not pretending a wedding day is seamless. It rarely is.
Being at Dunglass Estate, surrounded by photographers who are at the top of their game, learning from mentors who openly share their knowledge and process, was grounding. It was honest. And it was a reminder that growth comes from observation as much as action. It was also just good to spend time with incredible photographers from around the world. Conversations that stretch you. Perspectives that challenge you. That kind of space is rare.

Why Dunglass Estate Is Perfect for Story-Driven Wedding Photography

If you’re planning a Dunglass Estate wedding, here’s what I’d say.

The venue doesn’t need to be softened. It doesn’t need to be styled into something it isn’t. The gothic church, the stone, the scale of the grounds. It already carries mood and weight. That makes it perfect for couples who want their wedding documented honestly. Not curated into something unrecognisable. Not filtered into perfection. But photographed in a way that honestly shows them. Dunglass Estate in East Lothian gives you the setting. The rest is about being present enough to see what’s unfolding.

If you’re planning a wedding at Dunglass Estate and you’re drawn to storytelling that shows the full picture, the calm and the chaos, I’d love to hear from you.
