No Posing Required:

Why Your Couple Portraits Don’t Have to Feel Awkward

hello awkward my old friend

If the thought of standing in a field while someone tells you to “look natural” or “pretend I’m not here” makes you want to crawl into a hedge, you’re not alone.

Let me tell you, you don’t need to practise poses or learn how to smile for the camera.

You don’t need to perform or become a different version of yourselves because it’s your wedding day.

Think of your wedding couple portraits less as a photoshoot and more like a chance to step away from the loudness of the day for a bit of quiet between you both before heading back to your favourite humans.

The photos are just what happens while you’re doing that.

What Actually Happens During Your Wedding Couple Portrait Session?

Groom gives bride a piggyback along sunlit forest path; she's holding on, both laughing.

People imagine their wedding portrait session as a formal photoshoot where they have to pose and follow direction.

That’s not how I work.

The day will go fast, one minute you’re walking down the aisle, the next you’re surrounded by guests, hugs and celebrations. Taking a few minutes together gives you space to actually take it all in.

RELAXED COUPLE PORTRAITS

Sometimes your portrait session might be the first bit of time you’ve spent together so naturally you’ve both got a lot to talk about and laugh about between yourselves.

UNPOSED wedding photography

I come into your day with no expectations, so know that there is no pressure from me to act a certain way or do anything you wouldn’t normally do.

Don’t perform: just be yourself

there is no performance pressure When you are just being yourself.

No awkward posing

No fake smiles

The photos feel like your relationship

Why I Don’t Ask You to Pose

Some people want to be told exactly where to stand, where to put your hands and when to smile. And if that’s your thing, brilliant.  There are loads of incredible photographers out there for you who will gladly direct you and make some beautiful art.

When we head off for your wedding couple portraits, we’re not going to spend ages trying to create the “perfect” photo. We’ll go for a wander, you’ll have a chat. You might hold hands, you might stop for a hug, you might laugh because something completely random happens.

That is when the photos happen. Years from now, I’d rather you look at your photos and remember how it felt than remember what I told you to do. Those photos will still feel like you because they weren’t staged for the camera.

Your Wedding Photos Should Feel Like You

I believe this so strongly, it’s so important to me that the interaction between you both is genuinely you, so when you look at your photos you see yourself and your relationship. I don’t like the expectation to have photographs taken that look a certain way because those photos aren’t a true reflection of who you are or who you are when you are together.

“If you want a photographer who will let you just be you, won’t force you to pose, and creates gorgeous and natural actual candids, you need to pick Laura”

I Don’t Feel Comfortable in Front of The Camera

Maybe you’re someone who avoids being in photos altogether, or you never know what to do when a camera appears.

It is something people tell me quite frequently and I really relate to it. If you hate being photographed, or if the idea of awkward wedding photos makes you nervous that’s why this kind of approach exists and why it connects with so many couples.

people who told me they hate being photographed

Some of my favourite wedding photographs come from couples who told me they don’t like having their photo taken. That’s what you’re seeing in these photographs, it’s not people who feel they are naturally comfortable in front of a camera.
Once there’s no pressure to pose or perform, that discomfort and worry about awkwardness fades.
