YOUR GUIDE TO

Documentary Wedding Photography:

What It Is and Why It’s Different

What is Documentary Wedding Photography?

You’ve probably seen the term “documentary wedding photography” pop up when looking for your photographer and thought, “Cool, but what does that actually mean?”

Imagine your wedding day without a photographer, your day would just flow. No one telling you where to stand or what to do, it would move at it’s own pace, uninterrupted. That’s what a documentary approach feels like, no staging, no posing and no performance.

REPORTAGE.
UNPOSED.
OBSERVATIONAL.
CANDID.
DOCUMENTARY.

These are just a few terms used to describe a photographer’s style, you might also hear it called reportage wedding photography, wedding photojournalism, or candid wedding photos. Whatever the name, the goal is the same: to tell your story honestly, without forcing you into traditional wedding expectations.

HOW IT DIFFERS FROM

TRADITIONAL WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY

Traditional wedding photography is what most people think of when looking for a wedding photographer. Carefully posed portraits, everyone smiling at the camera, and a photographer giving plenty of direction and making beautiful art.

Documentary wedding photography flips that on its head. Instead of curating the moments, your photographer observes and anticipates them. It’s about reading the room and the vibe of the people you’re photographing, not everyone’s relationship looks like the photos you see on blogs. I don’t think you can tell someone’s story honestly, if the photos aren’t how people naturally are together. Sometimes it’s noticing the way your partner looks at you when you think no one’s watching, an eyebrow raise or a passing hand hold.

It’s for couples who want to feel present during their wedding and want their wedding album to feel like their day – not like a photo shoot. So if “different wedding photography” is what you’re after, this might just be the perfect fit.

WHY COUPLES CHOOSE

REPORTAGE WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY

If the idea of posing for endless photos makes you want to cancel the wedding, you’re not alone. Most of the couples I work with tell me they “aren’t posey” and don’t enjoy being in front of the camera, and that’s exactly why they’re drawn to a documentary approach.

Your wedding photos don’t have to be about posing or performing. They can be about presence. When you look at your gallery in years to come, it serves as a reminder of the excited nerves you felt in the morning or how you felt when you saw your aunty for the first time in years or even the terror when you watched your husband unexpectedly leap over the firepit.

Groom leaps over fire pit at night; others react on hay bales as colored smoke fills festive outdoor scene.

Wedding photography without the pressure. Just you, your people, and a photographer who gets it.

THE BENEFITS OF

UNPOSED WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY

So why does this style resonate so much with modern couples?

It lets you relive your wedding day the way it felt and not how it was posed to look.

Here are a few of the biggest reasons people fall in love with it:

real Moments Over Posed Perfection

These are the moments I’m looking for, the connections between people. No direction, just you being yourself with your people and your energy. Just the stuff that really matters.

NO PRESSURE AND NO EXPECTATIONS

Forget spending half your day away from everyone staging photos. You get to be at your wedding instead of performing for it. You stay present, live every moment and soak it all in.

IT AGES BEAUTIFULLY

Trends change, but emotion never does. Candid wedding photos always feel timeless because they are real connections between people. When you look back years from now, it’ll still feel like you because you weren’t performing for the camera.

Your Gallery Tells Your Story

What if your wedding gallery was filled with all these little moments, the random bits that happen in amongst the big loud wedding moments, these are the real stories on your wedding day. It’s less about single ‘perfect’ images and more about capturing the atmosphere of your day.

THINK ABOUT

The kind of experience you want on your wedding day.

Documentary wedding photography isn’t about trends or being edgy.
It’s about choosing to celebrate your day as it truly was – raw, emotional, and perfectly imperfect.
